E-Waste plastics in South Africa
The workshop on WEEE Plastics (WEEEPs) hosted by the Geography, Environmental Management & Energy Studies (GEMES) at the University of Johannesburg in November 2024, sought to address the growing challenges associated with plastics from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in
South Africa. Despite their relatively small volume compared to other plastic waste streams, WEEEPs pose significant environmental and health risks due to their complex composition and potentially hazardous additives. The workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including recyclers, environmental NGOs, government representatives, and academic researchers. By fostering dialogue, promoting transparency, and encouraging collaboration, the workshop paved the way for more effective and responsible management of WEEEPs in South Africa, addressing both environmental concerns and industrial challenges.
