Dr Ewing's research and practice focus on safer and more inclusive cities, with particular emphasis on creative approaches to co design and co production of the public realm.
Drawing on over 25 years of participatory action research, her work bridges practice, policy development, teaching, and knowledge exchange across South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.

Dr Ewing is a co founding director of Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading, where she served from 2013 to 2023. Her contributions have been widely recognised, including the Roelof Uytenbogaardt UDISA Memorial Lecture Award (2016), the UCT Social Responsiveness Award (2024), International DesignBuild Exchange Award (2024) and more recently, the UDISA Award of Excellence (2025).
