HySA/Catalysis at the 5th International Conference on Electrolysis

Jonathan Kabamba, Ziba Rajan, and Rhiyaad Mohamed represented the Catalysis Institute at the 5th International Conference on Electrolysis (ICE) in Freiburg, Germany, from August 24 to 29.

The conference brought together the international electrolysis community to present and discuss the latest research, innovations, and industrial applications in water electrolysis. With 329 participants from 30 countries, the event featured over 200 presentations, including oral and poster presentations, invited talks, and keynote speeches.

Attendees also participated in various workshops, covering topics such as catalyst-coated membrane R&D activities in industry, career paths for young scientists, and the societal applications of green hydrogen.

Our Institute's Contributions:

  • Jonathan Kabamba delivered an oral presentation on pressurised proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis, discussing its potential to reduce the need for costly downstream gas compression.

  • Ziba Rajan presented a poster detailing findings from her PhD research on electronic metal-support interactions in low-loaded iridium-based catalyst materials. This research focuses on improving catalyst performance for the oxygen evolution reaction, a key step in overall water-splitting efficiency.

This conference was a unique opportunity to network with prominent peers in the field. It provided valuable mentorship opportunities, established new connections, and strengthened existing relationships within the vibrant electrolysis community, all under the backdrop of the Black Forrest and the picturesque setting of Freiburg!
