Our own biogas digester!
On 8 February 2010, E&PSE took possession of our own biogas digester: a 6m3 prefabricated BiogasPro, installed at Leo Marquard Hall, a UCT residence. Over the next 12 months, we will be investigating the performance of this unit for recovering energy from food waste at the residence; the ultimate aim being to show that this technology can succeed in urban Africa - this has a particular importance for our work with urban informal caterers and for our theory of urban "energisation". The produced methane will be used for a gas burner in the residence kitchen. Our thanks go to the many stakeholders at UCT who supported us with this project, esp. the LMH residence management team, staff at Student Housing and at Properties and Services!
