Julia Tatham

Junior Research Officer

Julia Tatham is a development economist specializing in economic modelling of mitigation policies in South Africa. Currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Cape Town (UCT), she is a junior research fellow with the Energy Systems Research Group, where she works on projects focusing on decarbonizing the South African energy sector. Julia holds a master’s degree in economics from UCT, where she graduated with distinction and received numerous accolades, including the Economic Research South Africa top master’s student award and Gunnar Köhlin’s Best MSc Thesis Award for her research on the health and well-being impacts of solid cooking fuels in rural South Africa. 

Julia has a wealth of experience in sustainable development and energy policy. Her professional journey includes roles such as a short-term consultant for the World Bank, where she conducted socioeconomic assessments for South Africa’s Just Energy Transition, and as a Sustainable Energy Advisor at Sustainable Energy Africa. Her academic roles include tutoring advanced econometrics and mentoring students in survey data analysis. 

Her technical expertise encompasses advanced economic modeling and data analysis using tools like GAMS, Stata, and Tableau. Julia’s passion for sustainable energy solutions drives her work, which bridges policy analysis and technical insights to address the challenges of climate change and energy transitions in the Global South.
