Welcome to the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Bioprocess Engineering Research (CeBER).

CeBER is one of five UCT-recognised research groupings hosted by the Department of Chemical Engineering on UCT’s historic Upper Campus. UCT is positioned at the base of one of the seven natural wonders of the world, Table Mountain, and is surrounded by the diversity of suburb, city and township. At this inspiring location, CeBER fosters the future leaders in bioprocess engineering in South Africa and forges the way in cutting edge research toward sustainable bioproducts and processes.

CeBER strives to equip scientists and engineers at the postgraduate level with expertise that will allow them to excel in every sector of the bioprocess arena – from research, to industry, to environmental services and solutions. To achieve this, CeBER maintains a diversity of disciplines across its researchers and collaborators to nurture an interdisciplinary and enriched approach to research.

Our goal is to make accessible sustainable products and processes in South Africa by advancing bioprocess engineering knowledge that is relevant, excellent and built on transformative engaged scholarship. Through this, we will fuel South Africa’s green economy and developing bioeconomy. This approach strives to contribute to the circular economy and resource efficiency, while driving environmentally sustainable processes and socially responsive solutions in its transfer and application.

This will help grow South Africa’s developing bioeconomy through fundamental and applied research, using an interdisciplinary approach. We aim to contribute to the circular economy, improve resource efficiency, and promote sustainable processes and socially responsible solutions in the transfer and application of this knowledge.
