Welcome to the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Bioprocess Engineering Research. CeBER is one of five UCT-recognised research groupings that is hosted by the Department of Chemical Engineering on UCT’s historic Upper campus. UCT is positioned at the base of one of the seven natural wonders of the world, Table Mountain, and is surrounded by the diversity of suburb, city and township. At this inspiring location, CeBER fosters the future leaders in bioprocess engineering in South Africa and forges the way in cutting edge research toward sustainable bioproducts and processes.

CeBER strives to equip scientists and engineers at the postgraduate level with expertise that will allow them to excel in every sector of the bioprocess arena, from research to industry to environmental services and solutions. Our goal is to provide for and transform South Africa with an advancing knowledge of bioprocess engineering that is relevant and excellent and will fuel South Africa’s developing bioeconomy, through both fundamental and applied research built on an interdisciplinary approach. This approach strives to contribute to the circular economy and resource efficiency while driving environmentally sustainable processes and socially responsive solutions in its transfer and application.

CeBER is home to seven academic staff members; approximately four to eight postdoctoral fellows at any given time; and close to 45 postgraduate students. The Centre maintains a diversity of disciplines across its researchers and collaborators to nurture an interdisciplinary and enriched approach to research.
