The SATIMGE modelling framework consists primarily of two components:

  • A whole-energy system model called SATIM (the South African Times model),
  • A whole economy Computable-General Equilibrium (CGE) model called eSAGE

SATIM

SATIM is a bottom-up energy systems optimisation model which finds least cost energy pathways to meet future energy demand given various technical, environmental, and other constraints.

eSAGE

eSAGE is an energy extended version of the CGE model of South Africa (SAGE) which is a dynamic recursive, country level, economy wide model that simulates the functioning of the South African economy

This approach combines the technical detail needed for energy system optimisation with the economic analysis required to assess how energy transitions affect households, industries and the wider economy. Additional modules capture emissions from waste, agriculture and land sectors, allowing for comprehensive modelling of greenhouse gas emissions across the entire economy. The models exchange information iteratively, ensuring energy and economic projections remain consistent and aligned.
