Numerical simulation of multi-phase flow with phase change

Multi-phase flow occurs everywhere in nature as well as man-made processes. From the spray formation at the cusp of a breaking wave to the creation of a vapour pocket on the heated surface of a steam generator, multi-phase phenomena have been a topic of immense interest for scientists and engineers for centuries.

Despite remarkable improvement in computational capability in recent times, the required resolution to accurately simulate flows of this nature is still beyond our capabilities for many cases of practical interest. The focus of this project is to develop the required models to accurately simulate the nucleate boiling process. These models will then be added to an existing volume-of-fluid based code to create a simulation tool capable of characterising the heat transfer occurring on the surface of a heated component.

The research is a collaboration between the InCFD research group under Prof. Arnaud Malan, SARCHi Chair for Industrial CFD and Institut Jean Le Rond d'Alembert at Universit Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, France.
