CeBER is a registered facility classified as
Laboratory and Growth Rooms (at Containment Level 2), in compliance with Regulation 8 of the Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) Act, 1997 (Act No. 15 of 1997). The CeBER facilities are accredited to conduct laboratory research work involving micro-organisms. The mandatory registration is issued by the Registrar: GMO, in the Directorate of Genetic Resources in the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF). The registration certificate is valid for 3 years. CeBER was first registered in 2014, with the subsequent renewal in 2017, and the current registration renewed in November 2020.
