Gregory Ireland
Gregory Ireland is a Principal Research Analyst in the Energy Systems Research Group at the University of Cape Town with over a decade of experience specialising in energy transition modelling and planning across Africa. His expertise spans long-term national energy planning, detailed electricity system analysis, and high-resolution geospatial energy system modelling. Gregory leads multi-institutional collaborations developing and implementing integrated multi-model frameworks for various energy system challenges on the continent. His previous roles include generation systems integration at Eskom, covering all major generation technologies in South Africa, and geospatial universal energy access planning at the Reiner Lemoine Institute in Berlin.
He has authored influential reports on South Africa’s energy system, contributed to platforms such as Congo Epela, RE4AFAGRI, and offgridplanner.org, provided expert affidavits in court litigation, and supported modelling South Africa’s NDC decarbonisation commitments under the Paris Agreement.
Gregory holds an MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering and a BSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering, both from the University of Cape Town.
