Matthew Gabin
Matthew Gabin is a sustainability engineer and energy systems modeller at the University of Cape Town’s Energy Systems Research Group (ESRG). He currently contributes to modelling work for South Africa’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), focusing on the industrial, residential, and commercial sectors. His work includes developing LEAP-based scenario models, quantifying emissions reductions from energy efficiency interventions, and contributing to the technical methodology documentation. He previously collaborated with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) to support the National Energy Efficiency Strategy (NEES) update through sector-specific modelling. Matthew’s modelling experience includes Python (data analysis and visualisation), GitHub, LEAP, and Excel. Matthew is a certified EDGE Expert (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) and a graduate of the Absa Gen A Programme, where he gained early exposure to structured financial markets. He was awarded the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) Prize for academic performance and made the Dean’s List throughout his undergraduate studies.
