James Dicks
Deputy director and programme convenor
James is a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and serves as the deputy director at the Centre for Materials Engineering and the BScHons(Materials Science) programme convener.
His research focuses on sustainable polymer chemistry and advanced materials for additive manufacturing, with particular emphasis on developing high-performance, environmentally responsible photopolymers. His work explores green chemistry approaches to monomer synthesis, leveraging bio-based platform molecules such as itaconic acid to create functional materials for vat photopolymerisation additive manufacturing.
James investigates the synthesis of speciality polymers through sustainable pathways using renewable resources, addressing the challenge of achieving competitive mechanical properties in 3D printed materials while maintaining high biobased content and reducing reliance on toxic compounds such as acrylates. His recent work extends into 4D printing, self-healing, and covalent adaptable network applications. Through his research, James aims to bridge the gap between sustainable material development and industrial applicability, collaborating with local and international partners to advance the field of biobased materials. He is committed to training the next generation of materials engineers and fostering innovation in sustainable manufacturing technologies at UCT.
