Background:

Re-Integrate is a multi-partner project linking African Union and European Union research institutions to co-develop integrated assessments for climate-compatible energy pathways. For South Africa, UCT focuses on developing a provincial energy model, adding detail for the Western Cape and City of Cape Town to capture subnational policy dynamics and support coherent national and regional planning.

Project objectives:

  • Strengthen partnerships across African and European energy planning ecosystems.
  • Conduct integrated modelling to assess climate-compatible energy development strategies.
  • Provide evidence-based policy recommendations aligned with AU-EU climate and energy goals.
  • Create mechanisms for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and dissemination of tools and findings.
  • Apply these approaches to explore interactions between national and provincial energy policies in South Africa.

Project outputs:

  • Provincially disaggregated TIMES model for South Africa with Western Cape focus.
  • Integrated assessments linking energy, economy, and environment for AU-EU dialogue.
  • Policy recommendations and toolkits for decision-makers.
  • Knowledge-sharing platforms and teaching resources for energy planning capacity development.
