CfTS partners with or leads advisory and consultancy projects for a variety of South African and international government and development agencies. Past and current projects closely align with our research focus and teaching interests on topics such as passenger transport policy, paratransit reform, and non-motorised transport.
A range of professional, service and manufacturing industries contributes to the daily and longer-term functioning of urban transport and mobility systems. This includes civil engineering, urban planning and change management professionals; transport service operators and representative bodies; digital and physical mobility technology service providers; and vehicle, material and energy systems manufacturers.
We engage with many individuals and organisations from the industry throughout our work at CfTS. This engagement takes many forms. One example is our staff and students’ membership and active involvement in professional bodies such as the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE). Another is our participation in decision-making bodies in various organisations, such as with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) or an interdisciplinary pedestrian safety network for the Western Cape Province. We also have a long-standing record of providing expert input at industry-focussed symposia and seminars across the globe on matters related to transport and mobility in African cities.
Furthermore, our degree and CPD courses provide a platform for engagement with people from the industry, whether they work alongside us as invited speakers or are participants in these teaching and learning offerings. All of our courses draw heavily on the industry experience of our speakers as well as course participants, creating an exceptional environment for multi-directional learning between industry and academia.
