CMR represented at the SAIMM Mine Impacted Water Conference
The CMR was well represented at the SAIMM Mine Impacted Water Conference. The conference was held virtually over the 2 days, 12-13 October 2022, and showcased South African research in the areas of AMD Prediction, Management and Treatment as well as the Challenges, Opportunities and Utilization of Mine Impacted waters with a focus on the Circular Economy.
Keynote presentations by Gavin Mudd (RMIT University, Australia), Craig Sheridan (WITS, South Africa), Mansour Edraki (UQ, Australia) and Panagiotis Xanthopoulos (KU Leuven, Belgium - previous Student Presentation winner) gave context and focus to the conference. Kirsten Corin chaired Session 2 on Day 1 and CMR was represented by presentations from four post grad students; Lucia Dzinza (PhD), Sancho Nyoni (PhD), Matimba Mabonda (MSc) and Taonga Sinjani (MSc).
Matimba Mabonda was awarded the Best Student Presentation Award. The 2022 Mine Impacted Water Conference student prize is sponsored by the DSI/NRF SARChI Chair in Hydrometallurgy and Sustainable Development; School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering; University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It includes a cash prize as well as an invitation to be a Keynote Speaker at the next SAIMM Mine Impacted Water Event. Well done Matimba!
