Gaynor Yorath is Senior Scientific Officer operating the FEI FEG QEMSCAN quantitative evaluation of minerals through scanning electron microscopy) instrument in the Centre for minerals Research in the Department of Chemical Engineering. The QEMSCAN instrument is used extensively in supporting the teaching and research activities within the CMR. Prior to this she was involved in a major flotation research project within the CMR, and also in coordinating a two year metallurgical development programme for the annual intake of the Anglo American Platinum graduates. Before joining UCT in 2006, she worked for Senmin in marketing, sales and technical assistance of flotation chemicals to major platinum, gold and copper mines within South Africa and with Metso in marketing, pricing and selection of Comminution equipment for Greenfield site projects especially for the platinum industry within South Africa. She was extensively involved in the development of flotation processes for deposits in South Africa, Uzbekistan, Ghana, Brazil, Australia and Malaysia with Billiton Process Research, a Palabora smelter upgrade study with Davy South Africa, and the research and development of a new process for the surface protection on the Ferranti semiconductors in UK. She also worked as a plant Metallurgist on a plant producing tin, copper and zinc concentrates for smelting.
