Welcome to the Centre for Transport Studies (CfTS)
We are a diverse community of students and staff who strive to have a positive impact on the way people move in cities in Africa. We do this through our research to build and capture knowledge, and through our teaching to share and further enrich that knowledge. We also work hand-in-hand with communities, practitioners, public agencies and a wide network of international collaborators to respond directly to urban transport, mobility and accessibility challenges in cities on our continent.
Research outputs and media highlights
Gender-based personal security perception of ride-share for ‘before’, ‘during’ and ‘after’ Covid-19: the Case of Cape Town
Proximity is not access: A capabilities approach to understanding non-motorized transport vulnerability in African cities
A simulation-based optimization approach for designing transit networks
Post-COVID shifts in bus passenger trip timing and vehicle utilisation in Cape Town
About the CfTS
The Centre for Transport Studies (CfTS) is located at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment (EBE) and hosted by the Department of Civil Engineering.
We conduct research, teach and consult.
Our research focuses on:
- Paratransit
- Land use – transport systems
- Travel behaviour
- Non-motorised transport
- Road safety
- Evaluation and assessment methods
In our work, we look at politics, policy, demographics, behaviour, infrastructure, operations and other factors to provide input on strategies, planning and implementation for urban transport infrastructure and services. We are guided by principles of equitable access, safety, efficiency and sustainability.
