Background

Sherry Bremner is a post-doctoral researcher in the School of Engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as a technical officer in the Centre for Minerals Research. Her varied academic career followed her quest for understanding in the broad realm of Physics. Research projects covered the spectral analysis of light coming from distant stars and galaxies; the global distribution of lightning and the correlation with the radio phenomenon known as whistlers; studying the effects of solar flares on the propagation of radio waves in our atmosphere and understanding the energies required in comminution devices to improve the efficiencies of fine grinding. After completing her PhD at the University of Cape Town, she worked in the data science industry, developing machine learning models to aid in the extraction of useful information from data. As a post-doctoral researcher, Sherry now continues her research started in her PhD, on granular flow modelling with the application to understanding particle dynamics and energy distributions within horizontally stirred mills.
