The Centre for Bioprocess Engineering Research had the privilege of hosting world-renowned “Super-Professor” John Villadsen for the second consecutive year over February & March 2014. Professor Villadsen who has a sterling, global reputation in the field of biotechnology and hails from the Technical University of Denmark, joined CeBER to present a ten-day intensive CPD course on the Fundamentals in Bioreaction Engineering and the Design and Operation of Bioreactors.

Professor Villadsen took students through a systematic progression of topics from metabolic pathways and flux analysis, to thermodynamics of bioreactions, to biocatalysis. The second week gave the group the opportunity to explore bioreaction kinetics and their application in the design and operation of ideal and industrial scale bioreactors.

Students who attended the course had high praise for the esteemed Professor, recounting the experience as “an honour” that was both tough and rewarding.  PhD candidate Dylan Stevens described Prof Villadsen as a man of “intellectual prowess with formidable knowledge of his subject matter.”

CeBER would like to thank Professor Villadsen for sharing his valuable time and expertise with the Centre and we look forward to hosting him again in the near future.
