On the 23rd August 2017, CeBER had the privilege of hosting Prof Robert Kelly who hails from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University. Prof. Kelly is the Director of the NCSU Biotechnology Program and presented a seminar to CeBER on the metabolic engineering of extreme thermophiles for bio-based products.

His research group at The Kelly Lab at NCSU focuses on extremely thermophilic microorganisms, and their potential for technologically important bio-transformations. Some of The Kelly Lab’s research focus points are:

  • Plant Biomass Deconstruction by Extremely Thermophilic Caldicellulosiruptor species
  • Uranium Bioleaching by Extremely Thermoacidophilic Archaea
  • Post-Transcriptional Regulation in Extremely Thermoacidophilic Archaea by Toxins-Antitoxins
  • Metal Bio-Oxidation Mechanisms by Extremely Theroacidophilic Archaea
  • Metabolic Engineering of Extreme Thermophiles for Production of Fuels and Chemicals

CeBER look forward to many collaborative opportunities with Prof Kelly and his lab in time to come.
