On Saturday the 26th of June 2014 the Civil Engineering team comprised mainly of the CoMSIRU soccer team competed with several other teams in the first ever annual EBE postgrad 5-aside soccer tournament. CoMSIRU won 2-1 in the finals against the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
"We played the good, the bad and the rugby-like", said Mr Olukayode Alao. "Nonetheless the team prospered and our win may be attributed to the outstanding team work exhibited by the players."
This was indeed a galvanising moment for the CoMSIRU soccer team who say they had only come out to represent CoMSIRU, enjoy their weekends and the braai; courtesy of the EBE Postgraduate Student Council. The players claimed to have had no idea they would be walking away with the trophy that Saturday morning. They are humbled by the win and are sincerely grateful to their coach Mr Gordon Amoako as well as their tactician Mr Philemon Arito who both guided them through two intense training sessions earlier last week.
Mr Yorm Amesu, one of the team’s highest goal scorers this year, scored the first goal in game against the mechanicals. Bjorn Hohlig scored the winning goal minutes before the game came to an end. Those who saw him on the field say he played as though he was a German 2014 FIFA World Cup player in the game against Brazil; tactical and skilful.
CoMSIRU supporters indicated the win was no surprise for them and that it was to be expected. Several sources confirmed that the team was highly competent and deserved the win as they worked hard and played well on the field.
Lastly, the CoMSIRU soccer team wishes to congratulate the mechanicals as they believe it was a very close game.
