The Energy and Industrial Systems Research grouping studies sustainable development questions related to energy and material flows at systems level. It consists of the Energy Systems Research Group which holds South Africa’s only full energy sector model (and more), and the more materials-focused interests of the Circular Economy Study Group. Together, these research capabilities allow us to evaluate efforts towards a circular economy with near- or net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, both at economy-wide scale and in particular value chains or industrial sectors.
The research grouping seeks to achieve its goals by:

  • Training the next generation of academics, researchers and top end consultants through PhD and MSc research
  • Generating and publishing new knowledge through critical research and scholarship;
  • Questioning unsustainable practices and supporting sustainable development in the real world, by making our knowledge and research products accessible and adoptable.
