Biography:

Dr Thanos Kotsiopoulos is the Director of the Centre for Bioprocess Engineering Research (CeBER). His research is dedicated to the innovation and advancement of novel products derived from underutilised resources, particularly those of low economic value. His work is characterised by a strong focus on fundamental design principles and a clear emphasis on practical industrial applications, all substantiated through techno-economic feasibility studies. His research extends to diverse domains, including efforts to build engineering capacity within the biopharmaceutical sector. As a member of the South African mRNA Vaccines Consortium (SAMVAC), Dr. Kotsiopoulos contributes to process development and optimisation for various vaccine candidates. Furthermore, his research portfolio encompasses in-depth cost-benefit analyses, spanning both financial and social dimensions, closely linked to various elements of life cycle assessment (LCA).
