Biography:
Ishaaq holds a BSc and BSc Honours degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry. After completing a master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry at Stellenbosch University, he entered the mining sector, driven by a strong passion for analysis and problem-solving. He has gained valuable experience working at refineries, froth flotation plants, and various chrome mines across Africa. While the vast mineral resources across the continent are remarkable, Ishaaq has witnessed firsthand the challenges posed by irresponsible mining practices.
Motivated to contribute to more sustainable mining solutions, he decided to pursue a PhD in biominerals processing, an area he believes holds significant potential for advancing environmentally responsible practices in the industry. His current research focuses on utilizing naturally occurring bacterial phenomena to mitigate acid rock drainage (ARD), a process that threatens to contaminate South Africa’s already limited water resources. By the completion of his project, Ishaaq aims to deepen his understanding of ARD and its environmental implications, with the goal of making meaningful contributions to the field of sustainable mining practices.
