Bernelle Verster visits Europe!

Recently Bernelle Verster, CeBER PhD candidate, visited Europe in a trip spanning from the 2nd to the 16th June. She started in Spain, presenting at the Renewable Resources and Biorefineries Conference. You can view her presentation in blog-form HERE and you can read her conference feedback HERE.

Thereafter, Bernelle fulfilled a lifelong dream in visiting the Alhambra in Granada which exceeded all her expectations. Bernelle describes her experience of the architecture, the depth of diverse cultures that founded and influenced the design of the cohesive home, and the mind-blowing attention to detail, as a “must-see” in one’s life. The water channels in particular, that create a lush-oasis in a water-scarce environment, inspired Bernelle both in its astute engineering as well as its magnificent beauty.

Her trip concluded in Amsterdam where she presented at MediaMatic. The MediaMatic Bio-Talks is a monthly lecture series that invites artists and designers to present and elaborate on their work concerning bio-based research and design. The theme Bernelle presented to was about using water and it’s ecology as a resource. Other guests included Ivan Henrique, who brought his algae-eating robot and a highlight was the seaweed burger served by the Dutch Weed Burger.

Willem Velthoven of MediaMatic & Ekim Tan of Play the City graciously accommodated Bernelle in their home as she enjoyed exploring Amsterdam.
