• Fine tailings are applied to exclude the permeation of oxidants to acid generating waste rock surfaces
• Benign barriers as either alternating layered covers or blends with the acid generating coal interburden are investigated
• Tests are performed under continuous flow conditions to assess the neutralising efficiency over prolonged periods of time
