The Western Cape branch of the Southern African Institute for Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) recently held its 37th annual Mineral Research Showcase on the 11th – 12th of November at the River Club conference venue in Cape Town. The showcase, themed ‘Innovative and Resourceful Paths’, was organised by a student body.

A total of 60 postgraduate students from the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and the University of Western Cape had the opportunity to showcase their current research. Council members of the International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC) were also present at the showcase.

The Crystallization and Precipitation Research Unit (CPU) is proud to have had four students participate, with oral presentations by Taona Chagwedera, Lerato Motsepe and Jacolien du Plessis, and a poster presentation by Anotidaishe Dondo. The presentations by CPU covered aspects of resource recovery in the areas of Eutectic Freeze Crystallization (EFC) of brine solutions and antisolvent crystallization of rare earth elements.
