Professor Alison Lewis elected as an International Member of the National Academy of Engineering, USA
The Dean of Engineering & the Built Environment and Director of the Crystallization and Precipitation Research Unit (CPU), Prof. Alison Lewis, has been elected as an International Member to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in the USA.
The Academy membership honours Prof. Lewis for her contributions to crystallization processes for saline water treatment and extraction metallurgy, along with her leadership in engineering education. Election to the NAE is one of the highest recognitions bestowed upon an engineer. Currently, there are only five International Members from Africa, where three of those are from within the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town. Along with Prof. Lewis, this includes Prof. Sue Harrison and Emeritus Prof. Cyril O'Connor.
Prof. Lewis will formally be inducted into the NAE at the annual meeting which will be held later on this year on 29 September 2024.
