How the Unit Works

The Unit provides three levels of support to users depending on their needs and interest in Electron Microscopy:
Level 1: EMU personnel provide a complete service as per the users’ instructions.
TARGET USERS: Project has very short-term electron microscopy requirements; researchers who reside outside of Cape Town; commercial users.
NO TRAINING REQUIRED
Level 2: Users participate with EMU personnel through the imaging and analysis process.
TARGET USERS: Frequent electron microscope users who are inexperienced in the operation of the microscopes and/or require support for advanced analytical microscopy.
TRAINING REQUIRED
Level 3: Users are fully engaged in operating the microscopes and acquiring imaging and analytical data. EMU personnel provide support for access to the instruments.
TARGET USERS: Highly trained and expert electron microscopists.
NO TRAINING REQUIRED

The EMU is located on the first level (room 1.01) of the New Engineering Building on Madiba Circle on the Upper Campus.
