Project Title: Waste Data Reporting through Material Flow Analysis in South Africa.

Abstract

The Environmental & Process Systems Engineering research group at UCT is currently initiating a new project, which will look at assessing economy-wide prospects for a more sustainable circular economy in SA, using Material Flow Analysis. This project will develop indicators for circular economy planning and assessment. To conduct the investigation, readily available data from international and national sources will be used. Estimations will then be refined using further information specific to SA. The project will exhibit the current level of materials circularity in SA, thus allowing for the identification of problematic sectors within the country. Solutions can then be generated from this, in support of SA’s Circular Economy Agenda. At the moment, the direct contribution I will be providing to the project is still being defined. It will likely involve developing models and estimations in order to fill in the gaps with regards to unreliable waste data provided in South African waste data reporting.
