Project Title: Monitoring the Dispersion and Exposure of Ore Mine Dust in Saldanha Bay and the Effects of Exposure on Human Health.

Research Theme: Licence to Operate

Supervisor(s): Jennifer L. Broadhurst

Abstract

Mining and mining activities offer a significant contribution towards air and environmental pollution. This occurs through the dispersion of ore mine dust from mining areas, as well as through transportation, handling and storage of the mined ore. The elevated levels of exposure of the mine dust impacts negatively on the environment and surrounding communities. This study involves the monitoring of the dispersion of ore mine dust and the health effects associated with this exposure. Sampling will be carried out using low-cost particulate sensors, as well as gravimetric samplers. The analysis of the samples will be carried out to determine the metal concentration present in the dust. Statistical analyses will be conducted to establish relationships and correlations from the results obtained. The results from this study will provide an indication of whether or not the mining-related activities are the sources of the elevated levels of air pollution and whether these particulates contribute to the deterioration of community health. Recommendations will be made to identify the inadequate sustainable practices, such that re-evaluation can be done to improve processes and reduce negative effects on human life and the environment.
