Alex Opitz, Bridget Fundikwa, Dr Jenny Broadhurst and Mpendulo Ncongwane

UCT Chemical Engineering students excelled at the SAIMM Mineral Processing conference which took place in early August. Three students received Outotec awards.

First prize for Sustainability in the Minerals Industry was awarded to Mpendulo Ncongwane for his paper on A Feasibility Study of the Mineral Carbonation of PGM Tailings. His supervisors are Dr Jenny Broadhurst and A/Professor Jochen Petersen.

Second prize for Sustainability in the Minerals Industry was awarded to Bridget Fundikwa for her paper on An Environmental Assessment on the Use of Froth Flotation for Coal Recovery and Sulfur Removal from Fine Coal Waste. Her supervisors are Dr Jenny Broadhurst and Professor Sue Harrison)

The Outotec Postgraduate scholarship went to Alex Opitz for his PhD project on The Development of an Integrated Approach for ARD Prediction from Waste Rock.  His supervisors are Dr Megan Becker, Dr Jenny Broadhurst and Professor Sue Harrison.

Dr Jenny Broadhurst said, “I received many favourable comments from conference delegates and was immensely proud of all of them.  Congratulations to the students and their supervisors.”
