Professor Sue Harrison has been elected as one of 18 international members to the National Academy of Engineering. She is just one of six from the African continent to be elected to the academy.

Election to the Academy is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honours those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.” Election of new members is the culmination of a yearlong process.

Professor Harrison has been recognised for her work in biochemical engineering and its application to mining and environmental remediation. She is the Director of the Centre for Bioprocess Engineering Research in the Department of Chemical Engineering and is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Internationalisation.
