The overall aim of the transdisciplinary Future Water Institute is to conduct engaged research on water sensitive approaches that sustain society’s current and future water needs. The institute is driven by the urgent need to enhance capacity for managing water scarcity and building resilience; to innovate so that water supply meets demand; and to ensure technically sound, socially acceptable and sustainable water management policies and practices.

Several Civil Engineering staff form part of the core group of researchers in Future Water, including: A/Prof Kirsty Carden (Director), Emer Prof Neil Armitage, Prof Dyllon RandallA/Prof David Ikumi, Dr Amber Abrams, Dr John Okedi, Ms Teboho Mofokeng, and Mr Njabulo Thela.
