Robotics and mechatronics has an important role to play in a great many industries in the world today, and you can be part of exciting and innovative research being conducted at UCT.

At undergraduate level, students can pursue the Mechatronics degree programme, which is an inter-disciplinary degree that encompasses many different types of engineering, including electronics, control engineering, mechanical engineering and computer programming. This combination of disciplines equips graduates with excellent skills for modern industry and future research and is the degree needed to advance to postgraduate level research in robotics.

The Mechatronics and Robotics research group at UCT focuses on research in robotics and mechatronics, as well as on building a postgraduate student base for this stimulating and emerging field in South Africa.

At present, the research group’s efforts are primarily focused in the area of bio-inspired robotics, computational intelligence and neuromorphic engineering. Simply put, the research looks at biological systems and the way they work physically, functionally and neurologically, all with a view to improving upon conventional design techniques to engineer robots that can perform various and unique functions.

A Robotics and Mechatronics specialisation offers exciting careers in a variety of different fields, from the light manufacturing field to the automotive industry to working in high-tech areas, such as the South African Space Programme. Students also have the option of taking subjects in the biomedical field.

The Robotics and Mechatronics research group views collaboration as imperative and works closely with the Control and Instrumentation research group in the Department of Electrical Engineering, as well as with researchers in the Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Departments.
