Two UCT Architecture teams received the first and third prize for the 2015 Murray & Roberts Des Baker architectural design competition. The teams were asked to imagine an African City of the Future, sited anywhere on the African continent and to use film as their medium of choice.

 The winners were announced at the Student Architecture Festival, which was held at the University of Johannesburg from 24 to 25 September.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The first prize went to the entry Day Dream by Donna Huang, Kyle Mackintosh, Matthew Fourie, Hannah Cook, Blue Benington and Alexandra Wunderlich.  They looked at an emerging Cape Town of the future as new communities densify and develop in accordance with their resources. Their focus lies in ensuring that as the city grows, the large urban areas are sensitive to human scale and allow for a range of functions: from industry to civic and residents, all within close proximity.

The future is in your hands – choose wisely by Claire Barry, Christine Botha, Rese Boshoff, Sonali Chetty, Ohna Clark and Jess Goldring was awarded the third prize. Mr Mike Louw and Mr Jonathan Green were the academic staff who led the teams.

 “I believe that these entries point to the excellence and diversity of approaches our undergraduate programme helps to shape. The growing exposure to a variety of means of representation which is enabled in our teaching, allows for our students to investigate and question our current world in convincing and meaningful ways,” said Tomà Berlanda, the director of the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics at the University of Cape Town.
