Stuff in Space

“Stuff in Space” is a realtime 3D map of known objects in lower earth orbit (LEO), visualised using WebGL. The map is updated daily with orbit data from Space-Track.org and uses the Javascript library satellite.js to calculate satellite positions.

Satellites are indicated in redrockets in blue, and space debris in grey.

Zoom in and you can see the objects moving. You can also left-click on the individual items, to see the names and descriptions of the satellites, rockets or space debris. And on the left top, under ‘Groups’, you can find some additional information about the various satellites’ orbits.

It’s interesting – and rather alarming – to see just how cluttered the LEO region is.

The creator of this amazing site is James Yoder, an alumnus of FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 624 and an incoming Electrical and Computer Engineering freshman at the University of Texas at Austin. You can contact him on: info [at] stuffin.space.
