From 4 to 11 July 2015, the 3rd Radio Interferometry Workshop: Preparing for MeerKAT and the SKA, is being hosted at the Potchefstroom Campus of North West University in South Africa. Here is the link to the official website: Synthesis 2015.

The workshop will comprise lectures on synthesis imaging theory and techniques, as well as interactive training sessions, at a level appropriate for graduate students in astrophysics. Attendees will also participate in a scientifically-driven group project that will be presented at the end of the workshop.

The workshop will target graduate level students and early researchers. Registration is limited to 30 participants only.

Objectives

  • To give participants an understanding of radio astronomy concepts and instrumentation, and synthesis imaging in particular
  • To equip participants to take on science projects involving data from KAT-7, MeerKAT or other synthesis imaging instruments
  • To create future radio astronomers for the African continent
  • To build and strengthen clusters of radio astronomy expertise around South Africa and on the African continent

Proposed skills output

  • Intermediate to advanced interferometry
  • An overview radio astronomy data reduction
  • An understanding of the KAT-7 and MeerKAT instrumentation, with an introduction to Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI)
  • A particular understanding of synthesis imaging, with a focus on the resources required to process data from KAT-7 and MeerKAT and prepare students to take part in the approved MeerKAT large proposals
